2.  Why did Lear decide to divide his Kingdom among his three daughters?
  • King Lear wasgrowing old and feeble and he felt that it was time for the kingdom to pass into younger hands. So he decided to give up his title and spend the rest of his life in quitness and peace.
3.  What answers did Goneril, Regan and Cordelia give to their old father's question as to           whether they truly love him?
  • King Lear decided to share his kingdom among his three daughters.  But before telling them of his decision he asked each in turn whether she truly loved hi.  Goneril the eldest answered him first, she said that she loved him more than words could say, also he was dearer to her than eyesight, life or liberty. Then the king turned to Regan and asked the same question.  Regan answered in the same insincere way as Goneril.  she told her feelings were the same as her sisters.  Also she had not expressed half the love she felt for him, she was happy when she was able to serve him.  But for the same question the king's beloved daughter Cordelia said with sad heart she loved him as she should neither more nor less.
4.  What was the reaction of the old father?
  • The old father was happy for Goneril and Regan's replies and gave equally half of his kingdom.  But he was angry,sad and disappointed for the reply of his beloved daughter Cordelia.  In anger he said she was no longer a daughter of him and the king told her to go away from his country.
5.  Who was Caius?
  • Caius was the Earl of Kent, King's faithful servant.
6.  Why did the king ask the Earl of Kent to leave?
  • King Lear in anger shared his kingdom between his two elder daughters and forced his beloved Cordelia to go out.  But his faithful courtier, the earl of Kent, tried to persuade him to change his mind.  but king Lear after a bitter quarrel told Kent to leave his kingdom for ever.
7.  Why Did the king of France agree to marry Cordelia?
  • The king of France liked Cordelia, for she was the most rich, being poor.  He loved her for her virtues and her beauty and married her and made her queen.
8.  Explain in detail the treatment of Goneril?
  • The king first visited his eldest daughter Goneril, soon he found that all Goneril's love towards him was false.  Goneril made no efforts to attend to her father's need.  She allowed her ow servants to treat the king and his knights with careless and rudeness and they took no notice of his orders.  Soon the king realized that he was not being treated with respect due to a king.
9.  How did the Earl of Kent prove his faith to the king?
  • The Earl of Kent when sent from the court,  had not gone far away and returned, dressed as an ordinary servant.  He changed his appearance and name as Caius and he was a great supporter to the  king till the end.
10. What did Caius find before he reach Regan?
  • Caius found that Goneril had sent a letter to her sister Regan about their father's arrival.
11. What was the punishment given to Caius?
  • Caius had a quarrel with Goneril's servant the insulting the king, and was taken prisoner by the orders of the Duke of Corwall.  Caius was put in the stocks an old form of punishment, where a man was made to sit outside, no matter how bad the weather was with his hands and legs imprisoned through the holes of a wooden frame work.
12. How did Regan treat her father?
  • The king left the place and set off to Regan's place.  but Regan and the Duke of Cornwall too had decided to leave their place.  but they came to welcome the king.  The king told Regan about Goneril's unkindness.  Regan was as cruel and unloving as Goneril.   She supported her sister and blamed the king and commanded her father to ask forgiveness to Goneril.  But the king refused to do so and realized the wickedness and greed of his two elder daughters.
13. Who is the Fool?
  • Fool is the king's faithful jester.
14. Where did the king go in bitter sorrow?
  • The king with his faithful jester wandered through the storm together in search of a shelter.  They had no protection from the wind and the rain.  After a long search they found a cave.
15. Who is Poor Tom?  Narrate his story
  • Poor Tom was really the elder son of the Earl of Gloucester, a good and faithful young man who had been turned out of his father's house because of the wicked lies of his younger brother Edmund who was jealous and ambitious and turned their father against Edgar. as he wished to become the heir to the Earldom of Gloucester. To avoid recognition Edgar changed his appearance and name to escape from his dangerous brother Edmund.
16. Explain Cordelia's arrival?
  • The Earl of Kent sailed across France and told Cordelia about her father's sufferings and the wickedness of Goneril and Regan.  Cordeila persuaded her husband, the king of France, to send an army to England to fight for King Lear.
17. Narrate the fight between the two Armies?
  • Cordelia came to Dover with the army.  The french army led by Edgar and the Earl of Kent, and the English one led by the Duke of Albany and Cornwall and the wicked Edmund. In the battle unfortunately the French army was defeated, Lear and Cordelia was taken prisoner by Wicked Edmund and gave death punishment to kind Cordelia.
18. Who gave orders for Cordelia to be killed?
  • Wicked Edmund gave order to kill Cordelia since she was the right heir to the throne.
19. Why did Goneril poison Regan?
  • Gonerill and Regan wanted to be with Edmund, as he wished to become king of England,he made love to both Goneril and Regan.  When Regan's husband died, she immediately announced her marriage with Edmund so Goneril angry and jealous poisoned her sister.
20.  What was the end?

  • The good earl of Gloucester had his eyes put out as a punishment for helping Lear.
    French army was defeated. King Lear and Cordelia was taken as prisoner by wicked Edmund.  There was hatred and bitterness in the English camp.
    Regan’s husband had died, She announced her marriage with Edmund, but Goneril anger and jealous poisoned her sister.  And Regan also died.  Duke of Albany sent his wife to prison for her crimes and she killed herself in anger and despair.  Finally, the evil Edmund was killed by his brother Edgar.  Cordelia too died.  Broken hearted king fell dead beside his beloved daughter.
    The crown passed to the Duke of Albany who become the king of England.  Edgar became Earl of Gloucester.  They ruled well and England became a rich and peaceful land once more.
