  TALE OF TWO CITIES   by Charles Dickens Book One Recalled to life Summary In 1775 Jerry Cruncher a porter of Tellson’s bank in London stops the night mail which travelling from London to Dover. He has a message for Jarvis Lorry manager of the bank. Mr. Lorry returns Jerry with the strange response “Recalled to life”. This is referring to Alexandre Manette. He is a French physician. He has been freed from the Bastille Prison after suffering for 18 years. Now Mr. Lorry meets Dr.Manette’s daughter Lucie and her governess Miss.Pross. Lucie is shocked and surprised to hear that her father is alive. They reunite in France. In Paris Dr.Manette has been given shelter by his former servant Ernest Defarge and his wife Therse. He was born on February 4 1900 in Nouilly – Surseine.   He died on April 11, 1977 in Omonville - La- petite. His poems are often about life in Paris after Second World War. His poems are translated into many language worldwide. Prevert also wrote a number of class
