First Term 

Summary  1 to 5

Tom  is an orphan and lives with his half brother Sid, his cousin Mary, and his strict Aunt Polly in Missouri.  He caught red handed in Aunt Polly's pantry cupboard stealing jam, Aunt Polly is about to punish him but Tom narrowly escapes with his naughty tricks.  Again he is caught when he said that he didn't go for swimming , he is duly punished for his naughty behaviors and ordered to white wash the fence by Aunt Polly.  Tom is said that his friends would play on a Saturday evening but he would be punished with painting.  Also his friend would see him working. so he pretended to be enjoying himself in painting the fence.  Tom manages to tempt Ben Rogers and Tom takes his apple and offers his work Aunt is surprised to see the white fence and allowed Tom to play.

Tom  believes that his Aunt loves him dearly, but scolds him for his good.  Mary his cousin is kinder than Sid and her task is to see whether Tom is washed and puts on clean clothes.  Tom's best friend is Huckleberry Finn the social outcast.  He never attends school he is the misfit.  He is the son of the town drunk and has no mother.  Tom and Huck start to discuss various ways to cure warts and agree to go to the graveyard at midnight.  When the schoolmaster asks Tom for an explanation for  his late arrival, Tom proudly announces that he had been talking to Finn and the master punishes him.

Tom writes "I love you" to Becky thatcher the new neighbor and persuaded her to meet him. Tom then explains  the possibilities of an engagement between them.  Innocently she accepts but when he mentions his previous relationship with Amy Lawrence the romance ends there.  Tom run off to the woods and sulks for a while and then back to normal and starts to play Pirate with his friends.
That night Tom hears Huck and they go off to the burial ground.  They saw three dark figures Injun Joe, Muff Potter and Doctor Robinson.  When they rob the body they  argue and disagree with the Doctor and demand more money to steal the dead body of Williams, as the Doctor disagree they fight and and the drunken Potter is knocked unconscious, while Joe take the opportunity and kills the doctor with Potter's knife and blamed Potter for killing the Doctor.  Tom and Huck are shocked and flee from that scene. Joe had confessed to the villagers about the murder and blamed Potter and he is arrested. Tom is so afraid that he murmurs about the murder in his sleep and has to fake a toothache to stop Aunt Polly's constant questions.Aunt stuffs him with medicines which Tom feeds to the cat, Peter goes crazy because of the medicines.

Chapter 1

1. How did Aunt Polly find out that Tom had been out swimming?
  •  Aunt Polly finds out that Tom had been out swimming when Sid hints her to the thread on   Tom's collar. Instead of the white thread she used, the thread is now black. ... As for Tom, he tells Aunt Polly that he merely wet his hair with water.
2. What work Aunt Polly ask Tom to do?
  •  Aunt Polly asked Tom to paint the fence before going to play with his friends.

3. What things did Tom collect by the end of the day?
  • Tom had collected twelve marbles, a piece of chalk, a piece of blue glass to see through, a  key that wouldn't unlock anything, a tin soldier, six fire crackers, a kitten with only one eye, a  dog collar but no dog, the handle of a knife, and a number of things of that kind.
4. What does the beginning of the story reveal about Tom?
  • From the beginning, we learn that Tom is manipulative, fun loving, naughty and bit sneaky but clever and intelligent.
 5. How was Sid different from Tom?
  • Sid his half brother was a quite boy and had no adventurous troublesome ways. Sid is quiet and mindful of his manners. He is the total opposite of the mischievous Tom.

1. Write in your own words how Tom persuaded his friends to work for him?
  • He tries to bribe his friends. He agrees to fetch water for Jim. And he tempts his friend Ben Rogers by showing how interesting his work. He took up his brush and went on quietly with his work. A few minutes later, Ben Rogers came in sight and watched every move and became interested. Now Ben wants to paint the fence and took the brush from Tom and started painting with more enthusiasm. Tom was so successful in his mission, making his friends to work him.
2. Who is Jim and what is Twain’s intention of introducing him in a typical American home of Missouri?
  • In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Jim is the young slave of Tom’s Aunt Polly, the woman who serves as his guardian. Jim’s role in this novel is brief. He fetches water for Aunt Polly and persuaded by Tom to paint the fence but Jim though tempted to do so as the bribe was quite tempting but ran away, hearing Aunt Polly’s voice.

Chapter 2  

1.Why did Tom throw clods of earth at Sid?

 Tom threw bulk clods of Earth at Sid, his brother to take his avenge as he showed Aunt the black thread. Aunt Polly scolded Tom for throwing dirt at Sid, as well as for stealing sugar at the table. To gave in the reason for his act and complained that Sid is allowed to take sugar but he is not.
2.What made Tom show off?
  • Tom wishes at all times to be the center of attention, and his pained to share the spotlight with anyone. And also to win his new neighbor girl Becky Thatcher.
3.    ‘The other boys were eaten up with envy’ why?    
  • Tom took all the tickets from the boys of Sunday school and was rewarded a Bible.
4.   Tom managed to close on the pansy that the little girl dropped, but didn’t even know where is heart is. What does it tell us about Tom?
  • Tom is attracted to the little girl from his neighbor Becky Thatcher.
5.   What was Mary’s role in Tom’s life?
  • Mary was so caring person. She take care of Tom and give bath him when he was dirty with love and concern. Mary is Tom's "saintly" cousin. ... She helps Tom memorize his Bible verses. Even when Tom's at his most incorrigible, she can usually find something nice to say on his behalf.

1.  In your own words give an account of how Tom won the Bible.
  •  He got the new bible by trading for tickets. He gave a piece of liquor ice for yellow ticket. Tom traded a couple of blue ones and couple of marbles for three red tickets. Tom came with  nine yellow, nine red and ten blue tickets and demanded the Bible and was rewarded with a bible.
2. When a new family moves into town, tom sees a pretty, blue eyed girl with two long  plaits. Instantly the fervent love he has felt for Amy Lawrence flees from his  faithless heart, replaced by devotion to this new girl. Do you think Tom was actually in love with this new girl?
  • No Tom wasn’t in love with the new girl. It was an infatuation.
Chapter 3

1.   Tom woke up to ‘Monday Blues” Explain?
  • Monday morning Tom was miserable. Because it began another week’s suffering at School.
2.     What did Tom tell Sid in order to avoid school?
  • Tom told Sid that he is going to die.
3.   How did Aunt Polly take out Tom’s loose tooth?
  • Aunt Polly made one end of the silk thread fast to Tom’s tooth and tied the other end to   the bed post. Then she seized the chunk of fire and suddenly thrust it almost into the boy’s face. The tooth was safely extracted.
4.   The ‘tooth trial’ brought with it a strange compensation what was it?
  • He was the envy of every boy he met because the gap in his upper row of teeth enabled him to spit in a new and admirable way.
5.   What kind of a person was Huckleberry Finn?
  • Huckleberry Finn was hated and dreaded by the mothers of the town because they thought He was idle, lawless, vulgar and bad. He was cast off and his father was a drunkard.

1.   How did Tom win Becky’s friendship? What did he say to hurt her feelings?
  •  After seeing Becky Tom was attracted to her.  He gave a peach to her but she pushed it away. Tom wrote a request to take the peaches which was refused by Becky. Later Tom drew something on the slate hiding his work with his left hand. Becky partly saw what he was drawing, a house with a corkscrew of smoke issuing from this chimney.  Becky liked his drawing and requested him to teach her. Tom promised and they both became good friendsOnce Tom told Becky that he was engaged to Amy Lawrence and this hurt her feelings so much she ran crying.
2     Huckleberry Finn was the social outcast. Why do the mothers of the world dread their interacting with such children?
  • Finn was a social outcast. He hated by the mothers of the town because they thought Finn   was idle and lawless and vulgar and son of a drunkard. All their children admired him and wished they dared to be like him.
Chapter 4

1.   Why did Huckleberry Finn and Tom go to the graveyard? 
  • To throw the dead cat in the graveyard so as to get ride of warts.

  • Three men with a tools and lamp.

  • Tom was braver than Huck. Because Huck was shivering in fear.

  • Injun Joe murdered Dr.Robinson in anger and revenge with Potter’s knife. Joe put the knife into Potter’s right hand and pretended as if the murder was done by Muff Potter.  Joe wanted to escape from this crime also wanted to take Revenge on doctor for the wrong he did.

1.   What dreadful happenings did the boy witness?

The boys witness the murder of Dr.Robinson. Tom and Huckleberry Finn went to The graveyard to throw the dead cat in order to get rid of warts.  There they saw three Men, they were carrying hand barrow, rope and couple of shovels to dig William’s graveyard to take/steal the dead body.  Potter demanded five more dollar to the dead body which was refused by the doctor. Injun Joe who was waiting silently so far came towards the doctor and reminded him a bitter incident to the doctor. Five years ago the doctor drove Joe away from his kitchen for asking something to eat. Doctor’s father jailed him as vagrant. Joe wanted to take revenge and asked more dollar for the dead body.  They started quarreling and Joe took potter’s knife without Potter knowledge and killed Dr.Robinson and quickly placed the knife into Potter’s hand.  Potter was so confused as he was drunk and could not recollect the incident and Joe blamed him for killing the doctor and Potter cried for he too believed that he may have done this crime.

2. Who were the three ‘devils’? Was it some compensation to realize they were thankfully 'Humans'? What was the ‘talk’ between the three?  
  • The three devils were Muff Potter, Injun Joe and Dr.Robinson.
  • Injun Joe suppose to rob the dead body for Dr.Robinson for money.  But Muff Potter demanded more money from the doctor. Injun Joe reminded doctor about doctor’s father who jailed him as vagrant.  Joe was angry and he wanted to take revenge.   Doctor refused the money Potter asked and they argued. Injun Joe killed the doctor and put the blame on the innocent muff potter who was their third partner in the crime.

1.   Why did Tom and Huckleberry decide not to tell what they had seen in the graveyard?
  • Tom and Huckleberry decide not to tell what they had seen in the graveyard because they were scared that Joe might come after them.
2.   How did Tom try to calm his guilty conscience?
  • Every day or two during this time of sorrow Tom watched his opportunity and went to the little jail window and smuggled any small comforts through to the murderer as he could get hold of. And this helped to ease his conscience a little.
 3.  What happened when Aunt Polly wanted to cure Tom of his indifference?
  •  The "Pain-killer" became a regular treatment, and to Tom, it tasted like liquid fire. ... When Polly learns that Tom has fed the cat the painkiller, Tom explains for his actions by saying that he "done it out of pity for [the cat] because he hadn't any aunt" to "burn him out" and "roast his bowels."  
5.   What role does education play in the scene?
  • In this particular chapter the author views the educated indication n different way. Especially Aunt Polly who tries all medication on others is not suitable for educated people. Elite people would follow the medical prescription of the doctor. But Aunt Polly when a medication come on the market she would try it not on herself but on anyone else who was near at hand. This is not agreeable.
6.   What was the ‘shocking news’? Why was Potter implicated in the crime?
  • Muff Potter is arrested because he is believed to have murdered Doctor Robinson. In reality, it was Injun Joe who killed the doctor.

1.   What made Becky say ‘some people think they’re smart showing off?
  •  Tom was looking for Becky as they could not talk for some time due to a small misunderstanding. Tom was eager to talk to Becky and he was searching. After seeing Becky Tom broke through a group of boys and feel sprawling himself under Becky’s nose almost upsetting her. So she turned and said some people think they are smart-showing off.
2. Pick at least two examples to prove the simplicity of Aunt Polly and the people of        the town?
  • Aunt Polly is a simple, kind-hearted woman. He wants Tom to behave, so she punishes him whenever he is naughty. But she feels sorry and tries her best to do good to him.  Exacting his tooth and pain killer medicine to take away his stress are the two good examples.
  • People of the town are quite innocent. They believe what they see. When Potter stand before them as a criminal they didn’t hurt him. They believed the fake story of Injun Joe regarding the death of Doctor Robinson and convinced that Potter sold his soul to the Devil.
Second Term 

Summary

Chapters from 6 to 12

Tom went to school but was ignored by Becky Thatcher. He was so desperate, same way Joey Harper who had been scolded for drinking cream was so upset and both being depressed decided to leave all and steal off to Jackson’s Island and became pirates, Finn also went with them. They enjoyed the nature, swimming and fishing. They learnt from Huck how to smoke and did everything forbidden. Soon they saw a ferry filled with people. The kids realized that the towns people were in a search to find them.

Soon Joey felt homesick, Tom too and wrote two notes and took one note with him to see his Aunt Polly; to see her reaction of his death. He found Mrs. Harper and Aunt Polly praising their good at heart. Then Aunt went to bed. Tom kissed his aunt and left the letter on her bedside. Tom returned to his pirates’ game and planned with his friend to return during the funeral services held for the departed kids, Tom, Joey and Huck. During the service the three boys entered and surprised all.

Tom told Aunt Polly about her conversation with Mrs. Harper as if he had seen and heard in his dream. Tom became a hero in his school. Becky begun to show off to grab Tom’s attention. So she started to chat with Alfred Temple which made Tom Jealous.

Tom saw Becky was peering the school master’s anatomy book. But she tore it in a hurry. When the school master demanded who did it. Becky was about cry in fear but Tom took responsibility and also got severe punishment.

Finally, in summer the Murder Trial started Tom acted as witness and Potter is acquitted. But Injun Joe escaped through window. Tom feared for his life.

Soon Tom was back to normal and started his hunting fever. With Finn he went to a haunted house for treasure hunting. But they were horrified by the appearance of two men, one of whom is Injun Joe dressed as a Spaniard.

Injun Joe and his friend found a box of gold buried in the floor. He noticed the boy’s tools and decided to take the treasure. The boys again escaped unseen. But heard the “number Two, under the cross”
Becky’s parents invited her friends for a picnic including Tom. Tom's target was about Injun’s treasure, but he now enjoyed the trip, he and Becky entered the local cave along with others.

Huck since he didn't go to the picnic, followed Joe and his partner towards the  Cardiff Hill; the home of Widow Douglas. He heard Joe telling his plan to slit the nose of Widow Douglas, for her husband the judge got him publicly horsewhipped. Huck ran to confirm Mr. Jones the Welshman, of Joe’s plot. He and his sons scared off the rascals but failed to catch them.

Tom and Becky wandered through the cave’s maze-like passengers until the candle burns out. Both were dehydrated and starving. Since the kids had lied no one noticed their absence until Sunday. Once they found out about the missing kids, The judge Thatcher started rescue operations to find Tom and Becky. Eventually the children were able to find their way through a small hole and came back in town.

  • Depressed Tom took Joey and Huck to play pirates to Jackson Island with enough supplies.  They enjoyed and named themselves as The Black Avenger, Finn as The Red handed and Joey Harper as The Terror of the Seas.  They enjoyed nature,swimming and Fishing.  They learnt from Huck how to smoke and promised to do everything forbidden.  They felt heroic when they saw the ferry boat filled with town people searching for them.
2.  Often Children suffer a phase of persecution-feeling unloved by their friends and family.  They find escaping from such surroundings the only solution.  How can such situation be avoided?  Discuss?
Parents or Guardians should monitor their kids.  they should discuss with them about them.  They should listen and understand their side of the story.  They must not leave them alone or give a feeling of loneliness.




chapter 7

1.  How did Tom persuade his pirate friends to stay on the Island?

  • Tom told them his plan of hunting and they agreed to stay back. They stretched themselves on their elbows and began to puff, They spent the day between swimming and hunting for turtles’ eggs to key up their spirits.
2.  What did Huck teach Tom and Joey?  Did the boys enjoy the activity?
  • Huck taught them to smoke and they learnt how to smoke, they stretched on their elbows and began to puff.

  • About mid-day there was a glow in the foliage. And a faint moan came from the branches of the tree. There was a strange flash that turns night into day showed every grass blade separate. A deep peal of thunder went rolling and tumbling down the heavens and lost itself in the distance. Chilly air passed by rustling the leaves, and an instant crash followed that seemed to tear at the tree tops. The boys clung together in terror. A few big rain drops fell pattering upon the leaves. It roared higher and higher. The boys seized each other’s’ hand and fled to the shelter of great Oak tree.
4. What regret did Becky have?
  • she found herself in the deserted school house yard, feeling very miserable. She regretted to that she did not have his brass knob to remember him.

Tom got more cuffs and kisses. Tom felt that his plan had been worth and congratulate himself on its success.

2.  "Well,we'll let the crybaby go home to his mother....' Tom teased Joey.  Often children are teased for being homesick.  Discuss the pros and cons of parental  separation for such children.  Do they need peer teasing or peer comfort?

  • It is not a good atmosphere for children to be without parents. They need to learn humanity first from their family.
Cons
  • Parental separation would tech the children the hard side of life. They will learn all from their own experience.
  • They need comfort which could change their life.
chapter 8

1. Give and account of what Tom told aunt Polly of his night visit to her.
  • Tom said that he dreamed about her.  Aunt Polly was not quite sure of it. But Tom told that he saw Aunt was sitting with Mrs. Harper and Sid was sitting by the box. The wind blew the candle and Aunt said that Tom wasn’t bad, only mischievous and Mrs. Harper wished she hadn’t whipped him for taking the cream. Then Tom said he kissed her. Aunt Polly believed all his stories.
2.  How did Alfred show his dislike for Tom Sawyer?
  • After knowing about Tom's arrival, Becky lost interest in Alfred’s picture books, Alfred seeing that he was losing her attention tried to divert her attention. Becky at last said not to bother her. He was humiliated. His dislike of Tom became so great.
3.  What happened to Mr.Dobbins mysterious book?
  • Becky when passing Mr. Dobbin’s desk noticed the book, took and started to see the colorful pictures of naked human. Tom saw it, Becky snatched at the book to close it but she tore the picture half sown the middle by mistake.
4.  How did Tom manage to win back the love and gratitude of Rebecca Thatcher?
 When Mr. Dobbins saw his torn book. He asked in anger who did it. Becky was so nervous and trembling in fear. A thought shot like lighting through Tom’s brain. He sprang and shouted that he had done it. His sacrifice made Becky to come back to Tom.

  • He wanted to win back Becky and he was so firm and determined to impress Becky

1.  In what way was Tom noble?
  • Tom was noble in taking the blame on himself and punished by Mr. Dobbins He wanted to impress Becky.
2.  'What a curious kind of fool a girl is.  Never been whipped in school!  That's so like a girl.  They are thin skinned and chicken hearten'.  Is this a common prejudice girls have to battle with at school or is it true that girls manage to avoid harsh punishment while the boys are not spared?

  • Girls are very careful not to be embarrassed before their fellow students. They would follow all the rules and regulations whether they like it or not, to avoid these unpleasant situations.
Chapter 9

1.  What did Tom and Huck do to befriend Potter?
  • They gave Potter tobacco and matches through the cell grating.
2.  How did Tom become a hero again?
  • Tom told the truth in the court that it was Joe who killed the Doctor Robinson.
3.  Why was Tom and Huckleberry so frightened?
  • Tom and Huck were frightened of Red Indian Joe that he would take revenge on them as they told the truth and the police were in search of him.
4.  What important lesson did Muff want to convey to the boys?

  •  The world that had frowned on Muff Potter now took him to their hearts. They praised him. But that sort of conduct is to the world’s credit, and we shall not try to find fault with it.

  • The justice came so slow and late. Before that the innocent victim received all the shame and hatred of the society.

  •   Yes, Tom deserve it. Being a small boy, he tried to save Muff Potter and saved him by telling the truth.
Chapter 10

1.  Why did the boys go to the haunted house?
  • Boys have a burning desire to go somewhere to dig for hidden treasure. Tom told this to Finn. Finn was always willing to do anything that would provide entertainment so they decided to start the adventure.
2.  What did the boys see inside the house?
  • A weed-grown, floor less room, an ancient fire place, vacant window a ruined staircase, spiders webs.
3.  What plan did Tom make for tracking the men?
  • Tom went to the one of the taverns, room number two was a mystery. Tom thought for a long time, and said that the back-door number was Two, the door that came but into the little alley between the tavern and the old brick store. Tom asked Huck to find all the keys and decided to follow Joe for he was going to town to take revenge.
4.  What was the duo planning?
  • To follow Joe who was rushing with his partner to town with anger and revenge.
5.  How did the pick and spade ruin the plans of the boys?
  • The boys planned to dig for hidden treasure. But the pick and spade were taken by Joe and his partner.

6.  Why did the word 'revenge' strike fear in the hearts of the boys?

  • The word revenge strike fear because Tom said the truth about Injun Joe as he was the real killer. Joe wanted to take revenge on Tom. He wanted to hurt him.

1.  Give and account of the frightening experience that Tom and Huck had at the 'haunted house'.?
  • Tom is back to his old ways and is consumed by a treasure hunting fever.  Huck helps him search inside a 'haunted' house one night, but they are horrified by the appearance of two men, one of whom is the feared Injun Joe dressed as a 'Spaniard'
  • Injun Joe and his friend find a box of gold coins buried in the floor.  He had been using the place as a hideout.  He is quick to notice the boys' tools in the corner, and decides to take the treasure with him.  The boys only barely manage to escape unseen, but not before hearing Injun Joe mention hideout 'Number two, under the cross.'
Chapter 11

1.  What entertainment did Becky's parents arrange for her friends?
  • Judge Thatcher family back to town and Becky persuade her mother to arrange for a picnic. The invitations were sent out and all of the village were thrown into a fever of preparation.
2.  Where was Huckleberry when the picnic party returned home?
  • Huckleberry was on this watch, he followed Injun Joe and his partner toward Cardiff Hill, the home of widow Douglass. 
3.  Huckleberry made a discovery.  What was it?

  • The people had stopped moving out of the church and were whispering to each other.  They said they had not noticed Tom and Becky were on the ferry - boat.  It was dark and no one thought of inquiring if any one were missing.  The alarm passed from street to street.  The robbers were forgotten.  Horses were saddled, the ferry boats were ordered out and with in half an hour two hundred men were going high road and the river towards the cave.
2.  What story did Huck make up to explain to the Welshman his reason for following the two suspicious men?
  • Huck said a false story.  he said that as he could not sleep for thinking how he could do better, He went along the street about midnight, thinking it all over and when he got back to the brick store by the tavern.  He saw two chaps coming along with something under their arm.  He over heard them saying about taking revenge on widow Douglas.


Summary

Chapters from 13 -15

Tom is missing with Becky in the cave. Tom is strong to get Becky out of the cave.

Tom finds Injun Joe hiding in the cave. No one noticed their absence until Sunday morning. Rescuers start their searing operation. But the children are able to find their way out through a small hole.

Judge Thatcher inform Tom that the cave is sealed with a metal door. After a great shock. Tom informs them of Joe’s presence inside the cave. When they search, they find Joe’s dead body.

Tom now informs Huck about the location of the treasure. Together they find Joe’s treasure hidden in a secret chamber under a cross which they share fairly. It contained twelve thousand dollars in gold coins.

Widow Douglas announces her plan to adopt the boy as he saved her life. Huck refused to stay with her as he is not used to her life style. But Tom promised that they would form a pirate gang and make Huck one of the bold buccaneers. All’s well that ends well.

Chapter 13

1. What made Tom, Becky lose their way?

  • Tom and Becky went on hardly noticing where they were going. They found a large cavern with shining stalactites, they admired it. They soon came to an underground lake. They did not notice their friends.

2. How did Tom make sure that he finds his way back to Becky after exploring the narrow passage?

  • There were some side passage nearby, with the help of a kite line from his pocket, tied it to a rock. They started to explore the way.

3. Why do you think Joe ran away from Tom?

  • Joe thought Tom would inform the village and the police about him, hiding in the cave.


4. How did Tom spend his three days in the cave with Becky?

  • They went down a passage in silence. They turn off into narrow passage in a desperate hope of finding the way out. Tom hurried on to his steps. But they could, at last Becky fell asleep. When Becky awoke, they wandered on hand in hand and found a spring. They sat to rest, Tom took a piece of cake from his pocket ate it and drank the cold water of the spring with the help of the kite line he tried to find the way.

Chapter 14

1.How did Tom and Becky get out of the cave?

  •    Eventually the children are able to find their way out through a small hole and head back into Town.

2.What news did Tom have for Huckleberry?

  •    Tom inform Huck about the location of the treasure.

  • They together find Joe’s hide out, and the treasure hidden in a secret chamber, under across. Which they share fairly. It contained twelve thousand dollars in gold coins.

  • Judge orders the caves to be sealed with a metal door.  Tom is shocked to hear and he informs them of Injun Joe’s presence inside.

  •   In one place a stalagmite had been slowly growing up from the ground for ages, built by the water      drip from the stalactite above.

  • The widow announces that she planned to adopt the boy.
