Summary 

Act 1

It is a celebration. The Birling family is happy and celebrating the engagement of Sheila to Gerald Croft. Arthur Birling is in a good mood which made him to give number of speeches about the state of the world; technology and Industries.

At that time inspector Goole arrives. He informs Birling about the death of a young woman who was committed suicide by drinking disinfectant. Mr. Birling remembers that he has expelled a girl named Eva Smith two years before after she took part in a strike and demanding higher wages.

Sheila Birling is also connected as she had removed Eva Smith from her new job at Milwards. she felt sad for her death.

The inspector now informs that Eva Smith changed her name to Daisy Renton, Gerald reacted to this name. When Sheila asked, he was quiet. 

Act 2

Gerald admits his affair with Daisy Renton Sheila was hurt and disappointed and she has returned her engagement ring to him. But Gerald is honestly felt sad for the death of the girl.

When the Inspector reminds Mrs. Birling about the pregnant girl, she turned away from the charity organization she chaired. Mrs. Birling reveals that the girl lied to her about her name calling herself Mrs. Birling. also, the girl claimed that she had refused accept the help from the father of the baby as he had stolen the money from his father. All were confused about the father of the baby.

Eric enters and all were expecting Eric to be the father of the baby.

Act 3

Eric admits his guilt and tell them all the details. He tries to support her by giving money he had stolen from his father’s business. Having done the quarries, the inspector makes a speech about social responsibility and leaves.

Gerald re-enters with a shocking news that there is no inspector Goole is employed by the local police. Gerald confirms that no girl has died of drinking disinfectant according to the infirmary. All were happy.

But Sheila and Gerald do not feel the same. They feel guilty. They decide to return the engagement ring. Just at the point the telephone rings and all are stunned by the message. It says a girl has died in the infirmary. The Police is on his way to ask them some Questions.
