The Tempest - A Short Summary
The Duke of Milan called
Prospero was a wise and learned man, more interested in books. He left
the care of political affairs to his brother Antonio. But Antonio was
jealous of his Brother’s position as Duke. So,he and Alonso the king Naples decided to send Prospero
far away from his country.
One dark, stormy Night Prospero was taken prisoner and
carried down to the sea shore with little daughter Miranda, and were; put into
an old boat which neither Sails nor oars. Antonio was certain that the boat
would sink and they would be drowned. Alonso’s supporter Gonzalo put food, water,
warm clothes and some Good Books into the boat.
The little boat was pushed out to sea and rocked helplessly on
the waves. At last the storm ended due
to Prospero’s magical powers. Prospero saw an Island and landed safely and
carried the sleeping Miranda. The Island was rich and green with fruits and vegetables and fresh water. They decided to live there.
Soon Prospero realized the presence of fairies in the Island.
Prospero found a fairy called Ariel by chance. He once heard
the cry from inside a tree; with his magic power he freed the fairy from the tree.
This fairy Ariel had been imprisoned by a wicked woman Sycorax for twelve years
because all the fairies of the Island refused to obey Sycorax so she imprisoned
them inside the tree. After her death, nobody could free them from the tree. Her
son was half-mad Caliban. Prospero freed all the fairies and found Caliban. He tried
to teach him but Caliban was stupid and ungrateful. So finally, Prospero made
him his slave. Twelve years passed and Miranda grew to be a beautiful girl. As she
remembered nothing, she was perfectly content to live on the Island.
One day there was a
terrible storm. Miranda saw a ship being carried by the strong tide, the sails
of the ship were torn and the sailors cried for help. She ran to tell her
father. But Prospero did not seem anxious about the news. Because he had caused
the storm. He told Miranda that all would be well and he himself caused the
storm. Miranda asked the reason. So, Miranda sat near him. Prospero told her about their life
in Milan and the betrayal of Antonio. Prospero through his strange magic power
knew that the sailors were Alanso, the king of Naples arranged his daughter’s
marriage in Africa, After the wedding they were returning to Naples. The king’s
son Ferdinand was with his father on board. Antonio and brother, Sebastian were
all with them.
Prospero had planned the storm with Ariel’s help and ordered
Ariel to bring Ferdinand. Ferdinand had
been washed ashore alone. He heard a
mysterious voice telling that his father was drowned. Ferdinand walked towards the Island and saw the
beautiful Miranda and fell in love with her. Miranda too loved the moment she
saw him. Prospero wished to test Ferdinand so he imprisoned him with his
magical powers. So, Ferdinand decided to
serve Prospero to prove his love to Miranda.
Meanwhile on the other side of the Island King Alanso was
unhappy as he was sure of his son’s death.
Antonio and Alanso’s brother Sebastian were thirsty and hungry, but they
planned to kill king Alanso to make Sebastian as king of Naples. Prospero
knowing their plan through his magical powers sent Ariel to protect the king
and to frighten them all.
Ariel arrived in time, he found Antonio and Sebastian, with
their swords, he awakened them quickly.
Ariel changed his appearance and spoke to them about the sins they
committed. He went onto tell them that
his was their punishment for the crime against Prospero. They must show sincere regret and promise to
lead a better life in future. All were
filled with and sorrow. They swore they would be better men in future. At last Prospero appeared before them. All
begged his forgiveness and asked him to come back as Duke. Prospero took them to his cave and showed his
son and Miranda. Alanso asked her forgiveness and gave his consent for their
marriage. Next day all sailed back to
Milan, Ferdinand and Miranda were married and Prospero ruled again as
Duke. Ariel flew with free for ever.
