Star crossed Lovers – Romeo and Juliet

Birth:

We can find in Romeo and Juliet.  This defines the destination of ill-fated couple.  In the prologue, chorus say “A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life…”  it is about Romeo and Juliet and their love and affection face tragedy in the end.

The meaning of the term:

It means bad luck.  Ancient people had a strong belief in astrology where the stars control the destination and luck of human beings.  Romeo and Juliet are very good example for how two character who share love and affection fail and could not continue their happiness due to social and family feuds.  This led to the lover’s tragic end.

 How do you use the term “Star Crossed”?


We find this term in many novels and plays.  For Example, Romeo and Juliet, Wuthering Heights. Etc.  still this phrase is used to refer bad luck who experience a tragic end and never get an opportunity for union or re-union.

 As Literary device:

The prologue of Romeo and Juliet introduces the couple as star – crossed.  It foreshadows that the lovers may face hardships.  It refers to the destruction of the couple.  Elizabethan audience are familiar with this term and they know the stars are a part of whole chain of play.  Happiness could not continue, sadness, agony and pain all come in, to complete the chain of life.
